How The Adoption Process Works

Apply!

If a particular pooch has caught your eye or if you’re searching for a new furry family member, take a few minutes to complete our online adoption application, the first step in the adoption process.

Match!

Our application review team will contact you as they process your application and check with your references. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, but our primary responsibility is to find the best home for each individual dog and the best match for you and your family regardless of application order. We want to see that every animal and family are well-suited as a forever match.

Meet!

You can also stop by our Adoption Events to visit with our adoptable pups. Adoption Events are held on Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM at our storefront Adoption Center, located at 372 Townline Road in Mundelein. We are also available to schedule individual Meet-and-Greet appointments with approved applicants during the week.

Make it official!

Come into the rescue for the adoption to pick up your new best friend along with important medical information and a gift bag with some essentials. Our adoption fees vary by the animal’s age and specific breed. All adopted dogs receive vaccinations against distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus, as well as microchip, flea/tick treatments and de-worming. Dogs who are too young to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated against rabies will receive appointments to one of our local veterinary partners.

Please contact us with any additional questions! We are available by phone at 847-566-6799, through our website, or through direct messaging on Facebook.
We’re happy to answer any questions and work with you as you search for your new family member!

Adoption FAQs

How much does adopting a dog cost?

Our adoption fees vary by the animal’s age and breed. If interested in a specific dog, feel free to contact us to inquire about it’s adoption fee!

The application asks a lot of questions, what’s the deal?

Our focus is on making sure that each dog adopted from Reach Rescue finds the perfect forever home. Most of the dogs have been through some rough times and many are recovering from some level of neglect. We ask lots of questions to make sure this is the last time each dog has to find a new home.

If I fill out an application, am I locked into a certain dog?

No! Completing an application is just the first step. Once you have submitted an application, a Reach Rescue Adoption Counselor will reach out to talk about the specific dog you applied for. Adoption Counselors go through applications in the order they come in, but with the intent to find the right match for the dog despite application order. If the dog you applied for is not the right match, we are always happy to work with your family to find a good fit.

Will I get the dog I applied to adopt?

Once your application is approved, our directors and fosters will evaluate the fit between interested adopters and the dog’s needs. Our goal is always to find the best fit for the dog. Some dogs are adopted very quickly with many potential applications while others may have to wait in a foster home for months for the right family to come along. Be patient and keep checking back, there are always new dogs coming into the rescue system and we want you to find the perfect fit.

Do I get to meet the dog before I adopt them?

Yes! Come to our Saturday adoption events (12 to 4 every Saturday) to meet our available adoptable dogs. If you have a particular dog in mind, call us to make sure they’ll be at the event. And no matter what, each adopted dog needs to meet everyone in your family (including other dogs) before the adoption to make sure it’s the perfect fit.

What do I do when I bring my new dog home?

There are a lot of awesome resources to help you figure out life with a new dog or puppy! We will provide a few in your adoption folder, and you can also check out our Resources page for more. If you’re having problems, remember to reach out to us for advice and assistance.

I adopted a dog but I’m not sure it’s working out…

Each dog adjusts to a new home in their own way and in their own time. We always want our adoptive families to be ready to work through adjusting to life together. Don’t give up!

If the situation is such that the dog needs to be re-homed, please contact Reach Rescue. We would always prefer to bring the dog back into our foster program.

How do I keep in touch after adopting?

We love to get updates on all of the pups! Please join our Facebook group for adopters and share pictures and updates. Send pictures to your dog’s foster parents—we all love to hear about how they’re doing in their forever homes!
