Tips for bringing home a puppy

  • Potty outside before coming home!!!

Treat and praise this verbally, e.g., “good boy!”/”good girl!” as you pet or scratch them

  • Mark good behavior with treats and praise

Healthy treats in a small amount. Remember weight is the #1 contributor to health issues and longevity so use treats carefully.

  • Set “House Rules”

Make sure everyone living in the home knows and follows the rules, e.g., “Letting the dog hang out on the couch with you” will only get the dog in trouble later if they aren’t allowed on the couch when they decide relax there.

  • Make the cage/crate a good comfy place

Do not use the cage/crate as punishment, that gives the dog a bad association and will cause the dog to refuse to go there. Instead, treat and praise the dog and let them get a sense of security from being there.

  • Patience

Puppies are like babies, they pee and poop wherever and whenever. They don’t understand language — “sit, stay, bring me your toy” are all commands that can be taught with patience but take time.

  • Love

Be kind and loving and your dog will reciprocate the love back to you!
